THE COHEN FAMILY WILL DOMINATE THE ICE AT THE 20TH WORLD MACCABIAH GAMES

Philadelphia, PA, March 17, 2017 – Maccabi USA Ice Hockey Co-Chairs, Devra Schorr Pulley and Philip Pulley, are pleased to announce the appointment of Elias, Ethan, and Steven Cohen to the Juniors Boys’, Open Men’s, and Masters Men’s Ice Hockey Teams for the 20th World Maccabiah Games, which will take place July 4-18, 2017 in Israel. Maccabi USA will bring a team of 1,100+ athletes who will be part of the 10,000 Jewish athletes from 80 countries, participating in 43 different sports.

It is a rare circumstance that Maccabi USA fields a family of athletes in the same sport. As alumni of Maccabi USA and the Maccabiah Games, Steve and Ethan Cohen, father and son, have recruited a third member of their family, Elias, the youngest brother, to experience the 20th World Maccabiah Games with them this summer in Israel. In 2013, Steve was a member of the Masters Men’s Ice Hockey Team, Ethan was a member of the Juniors Boys’ Ice Hockey Team, and Elias, too young to play, helped as a manager for the Juniors Boys’ Team. This year, Elias will compete as a Juniors athlete in Israel, along with his brother Ethan, an Open athlete, and his father Steve, a Masters athlete.

“The ability to participate in the Games as a family may be the ultimate Jewish experience. It gives me a special sense of pride, community, and commitment, and it will be shared by every family member that will make the trip to watch” said Steve Cohen.

Since 1932, over 62,000 athletes have participated in the Maccabiah Games, in a celebration of Jewish Strength and Solidarity. Team USA’s success is not only measured by the medals won, but by the impact that the Maccabiah experience had on their lives as well as the friendships they formed.

Maccabi USA builds Jewish pride through sports, generating the emotional intensity, high ideals, and powerful camaraderie of competition.  We connect athletes, volunteers, and supporters with the global Jewish community.  Our athletic, educational, and cultural experiences build Jewish identity, perpetuate Jewish continuity worldwide, and strengthen support for the State of Israel.
