Transfers to select competitions. Today, you will embark on a guided City Tour of Budapest. The city of Budapest, known as “Queen of the Danube”, consists of three cities: Óbuda, the oldest section with Celtic and Roman ruins on the Buda side of the Danube; Buda in the gently rolling hills on the western bank, famous for its historic Castle Hill and beautiful residential area; and bustling Pest with its government, commercial and shopping districts on the flat plain of the east bank. We will follow Andrassy Avenue, one of the city’s main thoroughfares. It was once the site of palaces of the rich and famous, and some of the buildings still emanate the old glory: among them the beautiful Hungarian State Opera House. At the end of the Avenue, we will stop at the Millennial Monument on Heroes’ Square to see the most prominent kings and leaders of Hungarian history. Heroes’ Square was built in 1896 as an entrance to the World Exhibition that was to commemorate the millennium of Hungarian Conquest. Behind it is the city’s largest park, City
Park, which is the favorite gathering place of Budapestians, also a treasure trove of the city’s finest museums, spas and restaurants. Downtown pedestrian area boasts the city’s largest church, St. Stephen’s Basilica, and the majestic Parliament Building, built at the turn of the last century, rivaling the Houses of Parliament in London.
Hitting the Danube embankment, the hills of romantic Buda come into sight. Margaret Island, in the middle of the river between Pest and Buda, is a perfect big city hideaway used as a recreational area already by the Romans in the 2nd century A.D. Getting on the Buda side, we will climb up to Castle District, the historic heart of Budapest. Following, pause to sip coffee, shop or simply relax and enjoy the view, then we will continue to Gellert Hill for the ultimate
panorama of the majestic river and twin cities underneath. In the late afternoon, return to hotel for a light fare of snacks/sandwiches at the Ritz Carlton prior to Opening Ceremonies. Transfer by luxury coach bus to Opening Ceremony at Uj Hidegkuti Nandor Stadium. After, return to hotel by luxury coach bus.

Today, you will have a Jewish History tour of Budapest. Budapest has the largest Jewish community in Central Europe. The city has
22 congregations (synagogues and prayer houses), secondary schools and kindergartens, the only rabbinical seminary in Central Europe, a hospital and two homes for the elderly, as well as several cemeteries that are still used. The Dohany Synagogue is the largest synagogue in Europe and the second largest in the world. It seats 3,000 people and is the center of Neolog Judaism. It was designed by Viennese architect Ludwig Forster and built between 1854 and 1859. The impressive Byzantine- Moorish style copperdomed building was renovated with funds raised by the Hungarian government and a New York based charity headed by the actor Tony Curtis (whose parents emigrated from Hungary to New York) in the 1990s. The Dohany Street Synagogue Complex consists of the Great Synagogue, the Jewish Museum, the graveyard, the Heroes’ Temple and the Raoul Wallenberg Memorial Park. The Jewish Museum was built in 1931 on the site of the house where Theodor Herzl, the father of modern Zionism, was born. The museum, with its wealth of artifacts and documents relating to Jewish life in Hungary, exhibits religious and historical collections. Behind the Great Synagogue is a more modern building, the Heroes’ Temple, added to the complex in 1931. Commemorating the 10,000 Hungarian Jewish soldiers lost in WWI, it is used for services on weekdays and in wintertime. The Holocaust Memorial, designed by sculptor Imre Varga in 1989, stands in the courtyard over the mass graves of those murdered by the Nazis in 1944-45. The metal leaves of the unique weeping willow “tree of life” are engraved the names of some of the 400,000 Hungarian Jewish martyrs. There are two other synagogues in the area: the Kazinczy Street (Orthodox) Synagogue, that was completed in 1913, and
Rumbach Synagogue, built in 1872 by Austrian architect Otto Wagner for the Conservatives.
The “Shoes on the Danube” memorial near Parliament was created by sculptor Gyula Pauer and film director Can Togay. The 60 pairs of iron
shoes are a heart-wrenching reminder of the terrible fate of thousands of Budapest Jews, who were herded to the Danube embankment, ordered to take off their shoes and shot into the river by Arrow Cross militiamen during the winter of 1944-45. The monument was erected in 2005.
In the late afternoon, return to hotel and freshen up for Shabbat. Enjoy Kabbalat Shabbat at Shabbat Dinner at local synagogue with Maccabi
