Maccabi USA
Today’s Maccabi USA distinguished alum is gymnas Today’s Maccabi USA distinguished alum is gymnast Kerri Strug. Kerri was the official torch bearer for the opening ceremony of the 15th Maccabiah in 1997, a day that is somberly remembered for a bridge collapse that killed four Australian athletes and injured many others. Kerri won a bronze medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, and four years later was part of what was voted the greatest Summer Olympics moment of all time. Needing to secure top scores on the vault to beat the Russians, Strug injured her ankle on her first attempt. On her second run, she managed to complete the vault and landed on both feet to secure the gold before collapsing in pain.
