From the Maccabiah to the NBA with Danny Schayes

Danny Schayes is a retired professional basketball player, having played 18 seasons in the NBA from 1981-1999. He was selected by the Utah Jazz with the 13th overall pick in the 1981 NBA draft out of Syracuse University. His teams made the playoffs 12 times during his career, including a trip to the Western Conference Finals in 1985 with the Denver Nuggets. For his accomplishments on the court, Danny has been inducted into the Syracuse University Hall of Fame and the New York Jewish Sports Hall of Fame. Outside of basketball, Danny has built a successful career as a scholar, business leader, and sports business executive.

A true Legend of the Maccabiah, Danny has been a supporter of Maccabi USA for over 40 years. He was a key member of the Open Men’s Basketball teams at the 10th and 11th Maccabiot, winning a gold medal at each event. He was also selected with one of the delegation’s top honors as the Flag Bearer at the 11th Games. Danny returned to join Maccabi USA as the Masters Basketball Head Coach at the 19th Maccabiah, winning another gold medal, and coaching a team at the inaugural Maccabi Youth Games in 2018.
