Russell was born and raised in Johannesburg, South Africa and was involved with Maccabi South Africa as a young man. He graduated from dental school in 1972 and practiced general dentistry until 1978 when he and his wife Linda emigrated to the USA with their twin daughters.

They landed in Philadelphia where Russell attended Temple University and graduated number one in his class where he was awarded a specialty certificate in Endodontology Summa Cum Laude. He then went on to be an Assistant Professor and Director of Undergraduate Endodontics at Washington University in St. Louis. Russell has been in private practice, limited to Endodontics, since 1982 in North Palm Beach, FL.

He has been an avid squash player for over 50 years and has chaired Masters Squash and Captained the USA Team at the Maccabiah Games since 2001. Russell is a member of the Board of Directors of Maccabi USA and serves on the International Squash Advisory and Squash Disciplinary Committees at the Maccabiah Games.

Russell and Linda reside in Palm Beach Gardens and are fortunate to have their children, Debbie (Jason), Lisa and Andrew, and grandchildren Maya and Lucie, living in Southern Florida.
