Harvey was born in Akron, OH and majored in business at the University of Akron (1952) and Kent State University Graduate School of Business (1953). He served as 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force and upon completion of his service went on to found multiple businesses. In 1990 Harvey founded More than Gourmet, a manufacturer of stocks and sauces, from which he retired in 1999.

Harvey has been involved in Jewish philanthropy for over sixty years. Before relocating to Delray Beach, FL in 1999, he was an active board member with the Akron JCC, the Revere Road Synagogue, and UJA. Harvey was an active board member with AIPAC for over 45 years and continues to be an active board member with Maccabi USA, the Anshei Emuna Congregation of Delray Beach and the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame.

Harvey is an avid golfer and has been very involved with running golf tournaments for Maccabi USA both in Akron and Palm Beach. His love of sport, Israel and kids is evident when he travels to Israel every four years to cheer on the USA Team at the World Maccabiah Games.

Harvey and his late wife Carol have three children, Larry (1991, 2003 Pan Am Maccabi Games) resides in Boca Raton, Gary (Laura), and Michele (Steve Hirsch) and five grandchildren – Danny, Dylan, Julia, Micala and Sydney – all reside in Chicago. His sister Ruth, and brothers Bernie (Bette) and Saul (Mimi) still live in Ohio.
