Alan grew up in Bayonne, NJ, and after graduating became a high school history teacher and basketball coach at his alma mater, Bayonne High School. In 1973 he took a position as a municipal bond broker in East Orange, NJ. He relocated to Broward County, FL in 1974 and founded A.F. Best Securities in 1983 along with his brother Ben (z”l). He sold A.F. Best in 1999 and is currently the President Emeritus of H.J. Sims & Co. in Boca Raton, FL.

Alan’s avocation is golf. He first got involved with Maccabi USA as a Masters Golf athlete in 1997. After falling in love with Israel and its people after his first Maccabiah Games, he joined the Board of Directors of Maccabi USA and has since become an Endower and Sponsor of the Organization.

In addition to supporting Maccabi USA, Alan created the A. F. Best Securities Foundation to benefit children’s hospitals and medical research facilities. He also serves/served on the Boards of the Bayonne Jewish Community Center, Duke University Children’s Hospital, The Honda Classic, The Ben Appelbaum Foundation and Caves Valley Golf Club.

Alan and his wife Kerry are the parents of seven children, ages 25 to 36 – David, Danyelle, Dillon, Drew, Jeremy, Josh and Shane – and are still waiting for their first grandchild.
