MACCABI USA OPEN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TEAM APPOINTED TO REPRESENT THE USA AT THE WORLD MACCABIAH GAMES

Philadelphia, PA, October 10 – Sherry Levin, Head Coach, Open Women’s Basketball, is pleased to announce the appointment of twelve athletes to represent the USA at the World Maccabiah Games in Israel in July, 2017. Levin, the Head Women’s Basketball Coach at Worcester Academy, along with Assistant Coach, Jennifer Cosgrove, Assistant Coach at Fordham University, are excited about the prospects for this team of talented young women.

“It is an honor to be coaching such an exceptional group of women. On the court, they bring the highest level of talent to reach our goal of bringing home a gold medal,” Levin said. “It will be inspiring to travel with them, exploring Israel and deepening our connection with our heritage. We will come together next summer first representing the USA while competing to the best of our ability on the International stage, and then share the Maccabiah experience together. It is an amazing opportunity that will stay with us for a lifetime.”

The athletes all play competitively at their respective colleges, seven from Division I schools. They include: Tara Berger of Purchase, NY, Wesleyan University; Jennifer Berkowitz of Wayland, MA, Yale University; Allison Chernow of Dresher, PA, Emory University; Drew Edelman of Sunnyvale, CA, University of California Santa Barbara; Paige Fecske of Studio City, CA, Pepperdine University; Hannah Fox of Plymouth Meeting, PA, Amherst College; Hayley Isenberg of Dallas, TX, Harvard University; Leah Purvis of Valley Village, CA, Miami University of Ohio; Lauren Rothfeld of Dresher, PA, Salisbury University; Maria Shtikel of Shoreline, WA, Seattle University; Allison Silfen of Rye Brook, NY, Bowdoin College; and Emily Surloff of Los Angeles, CA, Columbia University.

The Maccabiah Games are the world’s third largest international sporting event and attracts elite Jewish athletes from around the world. The Maccabiah Games in 2017 will be comprised of 9000 athletes from 80 countries. The Games provide Jewish athletes the opportunity to come to Israel and compete at an elite level while also building connections with their teammates, competitors and the people of Israel.
