The US participates in four categories - Open, Masters, Juniors and Disabled. New sports for the US are women's field hockey, ten-pin bowling and triathlon. Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin addresses athletes at the closing ceremony in Jerusalem. Pre Camp was held at the Kfar Maccabiah. We initiated the Lev L'Lev program (Tzedkah project) in which athletes visited hospitals and other facilities in Israel, and offered athletes and Mission participants the opportunity to become a B'nai Mitzvah in Israel. The Last Maccabiah of the 20th century
A new program, Nosanu, "we travel", gives athletes the opportunity to participate in post-competition touring and explore the theme "In the Footsteps of Fighters." New sports for the US and the Games include beach volleyball, ice hockey and taekwondo. Tragedy strikes when a bridge collapses at the opening ceremony, the accident injures many and kills four Australians. The Games resume after a day of mourning. A US Team Rabbi accompanied the US delegation to Israel and participated in our Pre Camp and Mission programs.
